November 4, 2006

State & Local & National:
1. Get out the Vote campaigns in Davidson county: It is not too late to get involved.

Nov. 5 & 6: THCC will be phone banking from its office on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5, from 3-6 PM and again on Monday evening, Nov. 6, from 5-8 PM. This is a non-partisan event. Volunteers will be calling friends of the TN Health Care Campaign to encourage people to get out and vote. Call me this weekend at 1-615-430-8319 and let me know you want to participate in THCC's effort.

Nov. 7: TNT, Tying Nashville Together, TNT will be conducting a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) on election day, Nov. 7 in Nashville. Call 327-2625 to volunteer and click on this link for more details. TNT will be phone banking, canvassing, providing rides and poll watching.

2. Voting on Tuesday: Nov. 7 is election day.

Abraham Lincoln: "Ballots are the rightful and peaceful successors to bullets."

Click here and read what other leaders say about voting.

3. New tool to assist voters who may experience problems voting on Tuesday, November 7:

Voterstory.org

The tool is designed to document individual instances or stories where a voter is having trouble voting or has been denied the right to vote. Once a "story" is submitted, it will automatically be referred to nonprofit, nonpartisan voter protection organizations that will be standing by to intervene or lend support.

4. THCC needs a blogger:

George Haley will be giving up his blog on health care unlesss someone steps forward and says, "I will give it a try." If you have the interest, George will be glad to work with you and give you some pointers. Email George Haley

His blog is http://geotenncare.blogspot.com/

5. There’s a crisis in America today - over 9 million children in the United States – one out of every nine – have NO health insurance!

A surprising fact - many of these uninsured children are from hard-working, industrious families who, despite their best efforts, cannot afford the soaring costs of health care in the U.S.

Our leaders have not stepped up to help these children. Congress and the President have enacted tax cuts that mostly benefit the top ONE PER CENT of our nation’s wealthiest taxpayers. The cost of providing much needed health care to the nation’s presently un-insured children would be more than covered by that grand gesture to the rich.

6. Health Care in Tennessee: Do you have a question about Medicare Part D? Tony Garr will be interviewing Kyle Davis, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program Director for Middle Tennessee. Listen to Radio Free Nashville every Wednesday, 4-5 PM Central Time, on line, "Steaming Audio." Get the latest health care news, both local and national. Since Radio Free Nashville is a low-power community radio station, most of you will only be able to listen via streaming audio. To listen in to Radio Free Nashville. CLICK HERE.

7. Cover Tennessee: All the Cover Tennessee programs will be delayed except March 2007. Click for details.

In addition, the Medically Needy program has been closed since April 30, 2005 with the promise that it would re-open soon. It is November 2007 and thousands of low income elderly, caregivers and disabled people who need help have gone without. TennCare continues to be mis-managed.

Click here to see why Cover Tennessee gets poor grades for covering people.

The message from the Tennessee Health Care Campaign is: "Don't Get Sick"

8. IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS & THE FACES OF TENNCARE: Free screening, Sunday, Nov. 5, 7:00 PM at the Darkhorse Theater, 4610 Charlotte Ave., Nashville, TN. For more details click here.
