March 23, 2011 First Birthday for the Affordable Care Act
Denied...Denied...Denied

Three out of ten people who try to get coverage in the individual market are DENIED health insurance. BlueCross BlueShield's rate in Tennessee is 34%.

According to The Tennessean, it is not just older people who are being denied, but the young are being denied even though they are working and usually have minimal health problems.

"This is why we now have a Patient's Bill of Rights. People's lives are at stake," says Beth Uselton.

Don't Get Sick or Injured or Lose Your Job with Insurance

In the Tennessean article, these words hit me. "Besides picking and choosing whom they insure, (insurance) companies also can exclude ailments or injuries to specific areas of the body when they do offer a policy." Think about this. Have you been able to go through life with no injuries or ailments?

On September 23, 2010, children were guaranteed coverage with the signing of the Affordable Care Act, but not adults. Adults will not be guaranteed coverage until January 1, 2014. For more info, click here.

Rolling in the Dough

While more and more of us are struggling with just making it by, and 5 million more Americans have become uninsured just over the last 2 years, "the big for-profit insurance companies were rolling in dough," according to Wendell Potter.

Since the end of 2008, the earnings of United Health, WellPoint, Aetna, CIGNA, and Humana have "increased a Wall Street-pleasing 51 percent."

One might ask how did they make that much money?Think again. These insurance companies make profits by denying coverage, by denying benefits, or by excluding any injury or ailment from coverage. They are getting really good at this according to Tony Garr.
